Discover the Green Flag Gems of South Ribble This Summer!
Are you looking for the perfect family day out this summer?
Then look no further than the beautiful parks in South Ribble, proudly waving their Green Flags!
South Ribble’s parks have retained all four Green Flags as the 2024 honours are announced. The coveted Green Flag Award is the benchmark for well-managed parks and green spaces across the United Kingdom – and South Ribble is home to some truly special places that have earned, and withheld, this prestigious recognition over many years.
Worden Park
Worden Park is a true gem in the heart of South Ribble. This Leyland park is perfect for families, offering a mix of open spaces, woodland, and beautiful gardens. In fact, it has held the Green Flag Award since the scheme began in 1997.
Kids can let off steam in the adventure playground, explore the stunning maze, or enjoy a ride on the miniature railway.
The impressive Worden Hall, which has existed on the site since 1230, has recently undergone a £2.8million investment to bring the historic building back to life and now hosts a variety of events throughout the year and can be hired for weddings and private events. Whether you're having a picnic, or taking a stroll, Worden Park is a go-to for summer fun.
Hurst Grange Park
Next on our list is Hurst Grange Park – a green space that has delighted visitors for over a decade. This park – the largest in Penwortham – is ideal for those who love stepping back into history. The park is the former estate of Hurst Grange Mansion and is now an attractive landscape of specimen trees, pond and wildflower meadows.
The restored Hurst Grange Coach House, which dates back to 1848, now serves as a visitor centre following its refurbishment in 2021 and provides an insight into the park’s rich heritage. With play areas, sports facilities, and walking routes, Hurst Grange Park is a must for a perfect family day out.
Withy Grove Park
Withy Grove Park saw its first award last year following a large-scale £2.6million investment in Bamber Bridge Sports Hub which boasts a professional standard playing pitch hub, with two full size 3G pitches and a pavilion. The play area also recently saw the installation of a £110K slide which boasts eight levels of fun for families to enjoy.
Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve
For families who love wildlife and nature, Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve is a must-visit. This park has also retained its Green Flag status since 1998, thanks to its beautiful landscapes and commitment to conservation.
The reserve is a former brickworks, with the ponds formed by excavations at the site. The Nature Reserve is an oasis for birdwatchers and nature lovers with its large ponds and habitats attracting a variety of wildlife.
