Geography

Find your way around some of the stunning outdoor sites in South Ribble – including: Cuerden Valley – which covers 650 acres, half of which is used for agriculture. The park has a lake and was once the estate of Cuerden Hall.

Worden Park - Offering more than 60 hectares of meadows, woodlands and playing fields, Worden Park also includes a range of attractions in its historic grounds.

Brockholes Nature Reserve - This former sand and gravel quarry has been transformed into a natural haven. Autumn is the time to see ospreys passing over Brockholes on their way back to Africa, while in winter, the reserve is packed with migratory waders. The wildlife, teamed with tranquil lakes, transport you to a magical wonderland.

History

Take a step back in time at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland. The museum building was formerly part of Leyland’s Motors and the town’s history. It dates from the 1930s and formed part of the company’s South Works. For most of its life it housed the Customer Inspection Department, where lorries and buses arriving from production were closely inspected by purchasers before they took delivery.

Alternatively take a tour of the stunning Samlesbury Hall which dates back to 1325. A simple structure with a thatched roof, it bore little resemblance to the black and white half-timbered stately home you see today. At different times in the past the building has been an inn, a private school, a fabric weaving factory and now a unique tourist attraction which attracts visitors from all over the world.
